There was a war going on recently at Spencer-Penn Centre, but instead of battle cries and machine guns, this war involved laughter — and buttercream frosting.

The Battle of the Cupcakes decorating class was designed to allow participants to have fun while they learned about cupcake decorating. After learning to decorate, the participants entered a competition to see whose cupcakes reigned supreme.

If you’d rather focus on flowers this year instead of on watering and pampering and chasing away the deer, you may like some of the plants on J.T. Foley’s list.

Foley, the owner of Snow Creek Nursery in Figsboro, gave the program “Low Maintenance Annuals and Perennials” Monday at the Bassett Historical Center.

Twelve-year-olds ... and ballroom dancing?

An unlikely combination.

However, that’s the Friday night scene at Chatmoss Country Club, where fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders are going through a series of etiquette and dancing classes in the Commonwealth Cotillion.

Though polite dancing may be the scene on Fridays, plenty of protests happened before. Several of the kids at the classes — especially the boys — admitted they did not like their parents’ signing them up.

For many people, work is just that — work. For those who adore their co-workers, though, going to their jobs feels more like fun than work.

That’s been the case for years at Divine Essence Salon in Martinsville, thanks to MaCray Huff. Now, though, he’s up in Chicago for his second stint as a stylist at a fancy salon — and his former co-workers miss him.

Divine Essence owner Linda Young summed up his personality and his presence: “The McCray experience. You really can’t describe him in one word.”
