DALLAS (AP) — The bulk of a man's childhood comic book collection that included many of the most prized issues ever published has sold for about $3.5 million.

Lon Allen, managing director of comics for Dallas-based Heritage Auctions, says Billy Wright's 1939 copy of Detective Comics No. 27 that features the debut of Batman got the top bid at the New York City auction Wednesday. It sold for about $523,000, including a buyer's premium.

Metal sellers to face licenses

With legislation to deter scrap metal thefts likely a year away, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office has decided to require certain metal sellers to get licenses and be accountable for their sales.

Henry County Sheriff Lane Perry said existing state law allows him to require people to get a license if they sell 600 pounds or more locally, and/or make more than 26 trips per year to local scrap metal dealers.

Authorities will charge those meeting that criteria $50 a year for the license, Perry said.

Taxpayers’ plan focuses on Harvest
Foundation support asked for new schools; ‘opportunity fees’ proposed for new employees

The Taxpayer Association of Martinsville and Henry County on Tuesday presented its “Strategic Blueprint: A Pathway Back to Prosperity,” a plan that would tap more Harvest Foundation funds for economic development.

The plan calls on The Harvest Foundation to invest in recruiting companies, building schools and helping decrease area residents’ dependence on what the group calls “safety net” programs.

Area groups Tuesday got in the swing of Mardi Gras, the traditional festivity that precedes Ash Wednesday and the first day of Lent. Courthouse landscape project to begin soon

Construction on the Garden Club of Virginia’s landscape project at the former Henry County courthouse should begin “as soon as weather permits,” said landscape architect Will Rieley, who created the design.

Rieley talked about the project during a joint meeting of the Martinsville Garden Club and the Garden Study Club on Tuesday morning at the former courthouse.
