Editorial: Start litter effort now

R. Reid Young III and his anti-littering efforts appear to have struck a chord with area residents.

Young, a local attorney, has been speaking out for months about the problem of litter throughout the area, noting that it is more than an eyesore; it is hindrance to economic development and reflects poorly on community pride.

Tackle litter issue at root

Glad to hear and see all the concern about our garbage situation and what might be done about it. This has been a major problem for years and our entire community suffers from it. When a prospective employer looks around our community researching whether to start a new business here, this is a factor that causes us to lose out to other more attractive locations.

Farewell to Whitney Houston

There are events in our lives, which when they occur are not readily or ever forgotten. Who among us will forever remember where they were the day of the JFK assassination, or the death of MLK, or 9/11. One such moment for me was the rendering of the national anthem by Whitney Houston for Super Bowl Sunday in January 1991.

Water use is questioned

Thank you all for the nice article you did in the Martinsville Bulletin (Feb. 5, “Officials: Philpott level not issue for marina”).

My biggest response on the comment that (County Administrator/Public Service Authority General Manager Benny) Summerlin placed in the main article is this: Summerlin said the water plant that draws water out of the Smith River is permitted as a 4 million-gallons-per-day water plant — the same as when it opened in 1985.
